WHAT IS EMOTIONAL EATING?

When people are under stress or anxiety they tend to look for junk food or eat their favourite foods to divert their minds from stress. This is a sort of diversion from being stressed to excess hunger and eating is known as emotional eating.

This is a problem faced by many people all over the world, especially the women who tend to go out to eat their favourite unhealthy food which helps them to relieve their stress. The question is how much does it relieve the stress? The part where the attention needs to be paid is that the scientists claim that there is no harm in overeating but if it is an unconscious diet may harm your body and will give you only temporary relief to your body and after a short interval the stress prevails. This scientific term is "emotional eating", which is considered to be a type of disorder. This type of disorder cannot be cured at home but needs to be brought down under the notice of a recommended doctor.



NORMAL EATING V/S EMOTIONAL EATING:

Many women consider emotional eating a way to get relieve their stress, anger, fear, depression, etc. But the reality is the opposite, to get rid of overeating or suppressing your emotions, such eating may lead to the birth of obesity, fat, diabetes, and depression. Which can be easily observed in one if they are not hungry, but still are craving an appetite. When one is not satisfied with the regular food diet, they try to switch toward junk food cravings for satisfying their mind's hunger.

after such eating, still, you have the desire to eat more and more!! This feeling doesn't stop and tend to localize yourself amidst your favorite foods. Without knowing what you are eating and why.

In normal eating, you eat according to your capacity. You eat and you are satisfied. You choose a healthy food plate that will bring peace to your mind and you don't overeat, rather you are satisfied when you eat even a morsel of food less.

BETTER OPTIONS TO SWITCH OFF YOUR STRESSFUL MIND:

Emotional eating is not a solution to make you happy. It is not linked with your hunger. Emotional eating is not feeling hungry, despite it is a longing, desire which is an unstable way to relax your mind but in broad terms, it is only an addiction.

alternatives include:

  • Travelling
  • Listening to music
  • Walking
  • Talking with friends
  • Reading books
  • An outing to your favorite spot


The best medicine to overcome your stresses is meditation. It brings peace to your mind and increases your focus on positivity rather than distracting towards materialistic ways to get rid of your tenses.

Therapies or any sort of treatment cannot relieve your internal pains. Only a little bit of talks with yourself and sharing happiness with one and all can bring it back to you.

Here's a very common verse that BhagvatGita says, 

yajña-śhiṣhṭāśhinaḥ santo muchyante sarva-kilbiṣhaiḥ

bhuñjate te tvaghaṁ pāpā ye pachantyātma-kāraṇāt

Meaning:

The spiritual-minds, who eat the food that was first offered in sacrifice are released from all kinds of sins. Others, who cook food only for their self-enjoyment, verily eat only sin.
