 Turmeric is a herb, a plant in the ginger family. It is native to South East Asia and is grown in this region for commercial purposes. The rhizomes of this herb are flavourful and are used in cooking. Turmeric known to be a medicinal herb was used in the Ayurveda and other traditional Indian systems of medicines to cure many diseases. It is an antiseptic and an antibiotic herb that holds many medicinal properties known to mankind. 

It is a common spice and a major ingredient in curry powder. It is the main kitchen ingredient in Indian houses. It is added to Indian vegetable curries, dals, and sometimes in sweets too. It has a pleasant aromatic smell, alluring color, and soft slippery texture.

Curcumin is a major component of turmeric and the activities of turmeric are attributed to curcuminoids. It can also be made in the form of a paste to apply on the skin for several skin benefits. It is the curcumin that imparts the orange color to the turmeric. It is also contains orange- coloured volatile oil. 

Turmeric paper, also called Curcuma paper is steeped in a tincture(extract of plant or animal material dissolved in ethanol) of turmeric and allowed to dry. This way it is used in chemistry labs for chemical analysis for acidity and alkalinity in the form of indicators.

Uses:

1) Acts an anti-inflammatory:

 Helps in treating several diseases like inflammatory bowel diseases, pancreatitis, and arthritis.

2) Helps prevent cancer :

 Curcumin contained in turmeric has defined properties that aid to treat cancer by killing cancer cells.

3) Used in depression treatment:

 Used as an effective anti-depressant to relax the brain nerve cells and brain disorders.

4) Improves skin health:

It has anti-inflammatory,  antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties due to which it can be used to treat skin conditions or disorders like eczema, photoaging, and psoriases.

5) Support eye health:

Scientific reports claim that curcumin treatments can be used for improving lost eye health and to prevent its degeneration.
